"The Newsroom" takes on the Tea Party

From the season closer:
“What’s more frightening than the perversion of our great history is that sensible, smart, strong Republicans, the very men and women who should be standing up to radical fundamentalism are so frightened of losing primary battles to the religious zealots that they’ve thrown in the towel on sanity.....”

“It’s is ironic because the biggest enemy of the phony Republican isn’t Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid or Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, it’s this man [image of Jesus Christ]. He said, ‘heal the sick, feed the hungry, care for the weakest among us, and always pray in private’.

I left a comment on Twitter yesterday saying that a true Christian could never be a Tea Party Republican because of the Christian tendency towards collectivism.

Dear Jesus, please forgive my schadenfreude but San Francisco prelate arrested on DUI charge in San Diego.

"The archbishop-elect for the Roman Catholic archdiocese of San Francisco was arrested Saturday morning on suspicion of drunk driving after being stopped at a sobriety checkpoint, police said.

Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone, 56, who was appointed archbishop in July and is scheduled to be installed in October, was stopped just after midnight at a checkpoint near San Diego State University, police said. He was released from jail about noon after posting bail, said Det. Gary Hasen, a San Diego police spokesman.

***

"Opponents of gay marriage have credited Cordileone for assisting in the 2008 passage of Proposition 8, the initiative banning same-sex marriage in California. Then based in San Diego, Cordileone rallied religious leaders and wealthy donors to raise nearly $1.5 million to get the proposition on the ballot.

"Cordileone told the National Catholic Register last year that he believed gay marriage was 'a very serious social experiment that will have dire consequences.'"

dr primrose, I had to check you out on this one, because it was hard to believe that the bishop and member of the Corleone family - Oops! - the Cordileone family was tripped up so soon. You can't make this stuff up.

I like this show, I've watched it from episode 1.

And I have a crush on the actor Dev Patel, sometimes-wonky-eye and all.

Let's just say the arrest of "Bishop Sal" has provoked considerable schadenfreude here in San Diego. We've talked of him before, for those of you who want to know more about him, and his brutal role as an architect of Prop H8.

Nice new pic, Dahveed.

The guys over at Joe.My.God., not burdened w/ Christian guilt ;-p, having been having All.Kinds.Of.Schadenfreude.Fun. w/ the Bishop Sal story (apparently he was pulled over very close to SDSU's fraternity row---make of that what you will! :-X)

JCF, Bishop Cordileone's mother lives in the College area. He was driving her home after dinner with friends. The police had a checkpoint set up near the campus, for obvious reasons.

I've actually met him; he confirmed BP's son. He's a very smart man, very personable, and theologically extremely conservative: a dangerous combination.

Is there any more to the Bp Cordileone story?

Fr Geoff Farrow is asking questions:

“According to police, 56 year old bishop Salvatore Cordileon was driving along the edge of SDSU when he entered a sobriety checkpoint he appeared drunk and was arrested shortly after midnight. He was in the car with his elderly mother and a foreign exchange student, a young male adult.”

If San Francisco Archbishop-elect Cordileone were just the simple priest that he claimed to be to at his arrest, his superior would have demanded explanations.

What were you doing driving drunk?

What was a college student doing in your passenger seat at that time of night?

After you dropped off your mother, where did you intend to go, and what were you going to do when you arrived?

Have you ever spent time with, or socialized, with this young man prior to your arrest? If so in what context and what is the nature of your relationship?

I'm just wondering why I haven't heard of this "foreign exchange student, a young male adult" elsewhere. [Note that you have to LISTEN to the news report Farrow cites: it's not on the same local TV channel's webpage of the story! O_o]
