But may I play a bit of devil's advocate, and point you to an article that JCF showed me, called The end of men. women earn almost 60 percent of all bachelor’s degrees—the minimum requirement, in most cases, for an affluent life. In a stark reversal since the 1970s, men are now more likely than women to hold only a high-school diploma.....
Whether boys have changed or not, we are well past the time to start trying some experiments. It is fabulous to see girls and young women poised for success in the coming years. But allowing generations of boys to grow up feeling rootless and obsolete is not a recipe for a peaceful future.....
Over the years, researchers have proposed different theories to explain the erosion of marriage in the lower classes: the rise of welfare, or the disappearance of work and thus of marriageable men. But Edin thinks the most compelling theory is that marriage has disappeared because women are setting the terms—and setting them too high for the men around them to reach.
In our own culture, there are costs to making the men invisible....surely our future lies in empowering both sexes to form an equal society, rather than in raising one over the other. So the other half to the empowerment of the women in the video is the education of the men, so they can function in partnership, rather than either one squeezing out the other.
