In a rare public appearance before Salt Lake City lawmakers Tuesday night, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints supported two proposed ordinances protecting gay and lesbian residents from housing and employment discrimination.
An LDS Church representative read the supporting statement at a public hearing before the Salt Lake City Council regarding the ordinances proposed by Mayor Ralph Becker.
"The church supports this ordinance because it is fair and reasonable and does not do violence to the institution of marriage," said Michael Otterson, managing director of the LDS Church's public affairs office.

PR spin. They think this makes it okay, after what they did to us in CA?
After denying all sorts of civil benefits in Utah last spring in the COmmon Ground Initiative??
As the Dixie Chicks sing,
Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I'm not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I'm still waiting
I'm through with doubt
There's nothing left for me to figure out
I've paid a price
And I'll keep paying
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell and
I don't have time to go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
'Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is you think I should.
But this is how Mormons should believe and act. I suspect the protests which brought them far more exposure and bad publicity than they like actually awakened some of them to their own obligations as Mormons. It will take awhile to bring them to civil union equality but they will get there eventually. Perhaps more people should learn more about core LDS doctrine and pressure them on that?
So how does letting gay persons have spouses "do violence to the institution of marriage"?
Isn't Kool-Aid tasty?
Does anyone else's mind boggle that it's the Brigham-Young-Plus-His-Hundred-Wives Mormons getting sanctamonious about what "do[es] violence to the institution of marriage"?
Word verification: "inscre". Short for "insincere"? >:-/
This surprises me, truly, but it does not redeem them.
Thanks for reminding me about the song by the Dixie Chicks. I must load it into my computer and play it.
And, as JCF notes, who are the Mormons to lecture anyone about marriage?
Translated from the Mormon:
"See! See! We're not bad guys! We're really friends, see! We want to help you! So, there's no reason to keep on looking at who put how much money from where in what political arena, or to keep boycotting Mormon-owned businesses, or, heh-heh, to ask embarrassing questions about tax-exempt status! 'Cause . . . 'cause we're all friends, right? Right?! Defensive?! I'm not defensive! It's just so funny you should say that!"
