Book burning

The Raw Story reports on the latest book burning - inclucing Mother Teresa!
A Baptist Church near Asheville, N.C., is hosting a "Halloween book burning" to purge the area of "Satan's" works, which include all non-King James versions of the Bible, popular books by many religious authors and even country music.
...
Church leaders deem Good News for Modern Man, the Evidence Bible, the New International Version Bible, the Green Bible and the Message Bible, as well as at least seven other versions of the Bible as "Satan's Bibles," according to the website. Attendees will also set fire to "Satan's popular books" such as the work of "heretics" including the Pope, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

Rick Warren? Why would you buy them in the first place?

Krystalnacht in North Carolina. For some strange reason we have sown the wind and reaped the whirlwind.

As one of my favorite commenters on another blog wrote about this:

"The problem with Baptists is that they don't hold them under water long enough" ;)

I'm always a little amazed that the King James Version is regarded as "original." Have these people never heard of Hebrew and Greek?

A Baptist Bible College graduate explained it to Elizabeth Kaeton in her two related posts on their correspondence:

"I believe in a literal, infallible Bible, preserved in English through God's providence upon those human translators (that would have indeed been erroneous were it not for said providence)."

And a little later on:

"As you have known all along, I believe in a literal translation. I believe that Jesus died to pay for our sins, was buried, and then He rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures to be our One and Only Mediator between God and man. I believe that this is what the Scripture teaches. I could not embrace this without a literal translation . . . , nor do I expect others that I share Christ with to be able to, either."

So there is no reason to learn Hebrew or Greek (or for that matter to understand the vocabulary differences between modern English and Elizabethan English). On the other hand, "Mike" did not give any biblical citation for his position regarding a "literal translation".

Well, yes, Tom, they have.

Hebrew is what those Christ-killers speak and Greek is what those filthy ho-mo-sekshuls do.
