Spinning out of control

Our friend Cany is really on fire today discussing the pseudo-religious anti-intellectualism of the current political campaign. There is a cynicism to the way some conservatives use religion--even conservatives in a church--that really is only about holding onto power, not about doing the right thing. The sad thing is they are just as exploitative of REAL conservatives as they are of liberals. And cynically, they are able to drive the electorate like sheep.

In any case, go read Cany's latest post at Just Another Black Sheep, which articulates much of the frustration I have been feeling, better than I could.

Liberal and progressive blogs, many of which began as religious blogs, are astounded that someone so obviously intellectually unfit was chosen....

What began as a campaign of issues has become a farsical campaign of religious personality and has clearly reignited the culture wars. The outside world must be astounded. Would America really do somthing this stupid after eight years of lapsed judgement dragging our international reputation down a perverbial rat hole and plundering our economy?

The saddest part of all, really, is that the typically beaten will be beaten again unless we get this campaign out of the gutter of personality and back onto the issues. They cannot afford more abuse, and neither can we.
Sing it, sister!

The more I read about Gov. Palin the more appalled I am by the choice. This is like something from bad horror movies. The unknown attractive VP candidate whose sole purpose is rounding out the ticket. Then the McCain is elected, dies and suddenly she's POTUS. Quite simply I can not imagine a more frightening situation. Any chance I might have voted for McCain(and there was a slim chance) disappears. There is just frightening.

Yes, but the really scary thing is how many people have reacted the other way!!!!

And McCain's lawyers are now in Alaska trying to block the corruption investigation in the legislature--so much for Palin reforming politics in the frozen north. Sounds like the same ol stuff.

If I has been inclined to vote for McCain, whom I admire for surviving the prison camp, his running mate being an Assembly of God character would have changed my mind. We've had eight years of a third rate cowboy-wannabe thinking he speaks for God, we don't want another yahoo who will continue to speak for god but this time in "tongues."

The RC leadership has latched on to this Polin person like flies on you-know-what. And all because she is anti abortion and gay rights. The country is going into bankruptcy and all they care about is who is anti these two issues.

Perhaps the Federalists were correct -- the masses are not capable of making informed choices so must be denied the vote.

I still don't see it, IT. No Comment button visible, on which one (or, um, I) could post.

If it helps, there's no author or time stamp on the entry, either (which is on the same line, as the Comment button would appear), ala this one:

FWIW, this is in IE. I don't know about Firefox...

McCain is now ahead of Obama in Gallup presidential polling. What a nightmare. I don't understand how prop 8 does anything to salvage the 50% of "traditional" hetero marriages that end in divorce, unless it provides a mechanism to scapegoat GLBTQ persons for the failures of heterosexual persons. I've never seen any Mormons, Knights of Columbus, or Evangelicals picketing outside of divorce court. The christianist religion frightens me, which is why I (an American) am choosing to spend so much more time outside of the USA. I am discouraged by the recent Gallup poll. If the GOP is losing I imagine they will find some way of stealing the election (like Gore V. Bush in 2000).

It's the RNC convention bounce, Marko. Hopefully it will calm down a bit, but the Christianist wing are definitely energized by Palin.

JCF, I'll look under the hood....

I am hoping that McCain's psychotic anger management issues and Palin's incompetence and religious fanaticism will be manifested during debates. Today Palin responded (to media inquiry) tht she didn't really know what Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac do (and why the feds are taking them over). God help us.

Funny thing about the RC's flocking to McCain/Palin, if what I heard is true, Palin is concidered an apostate. I haven't been able to verify it, but I think she was baptized RC, but is now a member of the AG church.
