on being used

Trevor Mwamba, Bishop of Botswana, is featured in the Church Times today:
Mwamba said,
“My personal view is that it wasn’t helpful at all. I can understand where they are coming from in being in a Muslim context. But having said that, I am also aware that somebody organised that position. In the context of the conference it’s regrettable that it was done but here are other factors at play and we need to name those factors.
“We are using each other at times for ends which are not constructive. That’s just one example of people being used. Another is that people are continuously talking up the absence of our brothers from four African provinces from this meeting. But the point is that a lot of those brothers of ours – 200 is a nice round figure – would have wanted to come here. That’s important to say.”

Ashworth continues in her report:

Bishop Mwamba described the situation as it had been in Uganda, “where a special Synod is organised and provision passed which would penalise any bishop coming to the Lambeth Conference. That denied freedom of expression in terms of any individual bishop. The invitation to Lambeth is in the gift of the archbishop and it is up to a particular bishop, not a particular province, to say I will come or I won’t come.

Off-topic:

Ever since I heard WHAT church was shot up yesterday (and secondarily, WHERE), I was sort of waiting for this shoe to drop... and it did:

Letter Proves Gay-Inclusion Motivated Church Shooting

Jim D. Adkisson wanted to fight a gay-inclusive church’s “liberal movement” when he shot-up Sunday services this weekend, said police. Fifty-eight year old Adkisson allegedly killed two and injured seven at about 10:18 on yesterday morning and a letter found in his car later specified his murderous “reasoning:”

"The shotgun-wielding suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was motivated by a hatred of “the liberal movement,” and he planned to shoot until police shot him, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said this morning.

[Adkisson] of Powell wrote a four-page letter in which he stated his “hatred of the liberal movement,” Owen said. “Liberals in general, as well as gays.”

The four-page letter indicates that Adkisson had been planning the attack for about a week.

Report here.

Even though Adkisson is clearly crazy (you're unemployed, and you blame "liberals"? That's like having cancer, and blaming oncologists! :-0), still, it's a predictable kind of crazy that our homophobic society produces (i.e., serving the "Principalities & Powers").

While I may Christological differences w/ the UUs, I have little doubt they were killed for practicing The Gospel (kinda wish Grace were here to argue w/ me ;-/)

Lord, grant rest eternal to your saints!

This is so very sad, JCF. Not unexpected, however. Words harm and to an unbalanced mind, they apparently motivate, as well.

And when the voices in our own communion spew hatred for any group of people, it just adds to the edge of everyone IN that hatred.

It is a terrible, tragic but inevitable consequence. I don't know what it will take for our Communion to understand the relationship between hateful words and violence.

I found Anderson's comment last week that Sudanese Bishop Bul's words were "loving" not only incomprehensible but extremely hurtful, as well. Loving?

This whole mess is just heartbreaking for me to watch. It is a dynamic that is so terribly human, and so tragically removed from God.

I have found myself so depressed over the last 72 hours that I have been watching comedies trying to snap out of it.

So far, it isn't working.

What? WHO?

Surely, NOT Bonnie Anderson? Whom are you talking about, cany?
