On empathy and community

There's a neat article from NPR, discussing different research studies that come to the same conclusion:  as people become wealthier, they become less generous.  And part of this is that they become disconnected from community.  They become hoarders of gold, selfish, and individualized.

This is not new.  Indeed, the more wealthy you are, the more likely you are to behave unethically.  And yes, some of those Wall Street tycoons really ARE psychopath

Do you remember during the election when Mitt Romney was nailed for his disdain towards the 47%?  We talked about that here.  And about the disdain of the Tea Folk for the poor.  Once you see people as "them", rather than "us", that's inevitable.

And it is certainly not Christian.  Whose foodstamps would Jesus cut?

"[Jesus] sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, 'Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.'"

But, as a previous commentator noted, this is merely the Gospel according to NPR and so we can freely ignore it.
