Why blog?

Back in the day, we used to have many many readers and many many commenters. We even had a few more bloggers on this "group" blog, but it's been mostly my voice for some time. And I guess all the conversation has moved to facebook, because most days the only comments I see are from spammers (we get lots of those).  I assume there are a bunch of you reading blogs off of RSS feeds (that's what I do too), but I've got no way to monitor that.

So, am I just shouting into an abyss, or is anyone out there? Do I keep going?

I enjoy reading your posts.

Please keep going. Yours is the sanest site on the internet and we need more liberal commentators.

IT, I'm pondering the same question. I really do not like Facebook, but I'm there because my family and friends are there, and I want to stay in touch.

I bark "Keep going"!!!

Oh, and mark me down as an RSS person too, because I have confidence that diggit or feedly or someone is going to replace google reader! It may cost something, but it will be worth it to keep up with my 650 feeds! Blogs have a permanence that fb will never have! Also a thoughtfulness that the average fb post will never ever have!

Oh, and if you unsubscribe and then resubscribe to the RSS feed you get this:

The Friends of Jake »

See, there's 130 subscriptions to the RSS feed. Don't stop now!

I am not on Facebook and am not sure what RSS feed is. Then I am just one year off turning 70 and most if not all my friends my age (if they use the internet at all) only know emails and google.

My only annoyance w/ this blog is technical: the lack of a white box around the post makes it hard to read (in IE, and I haven't yet made a practice of looking at it in Firefox).

I don't always comment (you so often speak for me, IT, I'd just end up saying "Me too!" ;-) ), but I do fairly often [One of my preferred commenting styles is as counter-puncher, so if you blog more about atheism, that will probably prompt me to respond! :-p]

Please keep on keeping on, IT! [If you ever sent me the instructions to blog here, I must have lost them. You can send them again to jcf1899 at gmail dot com]

I'm a subscriber and read it too. How much overlap is there between this and your other blog?

On Facebook the conversation is only with "friends" and therefore not much controversy or debate. I appreciate your blog which allows for differing opinions.

I read your blog regularly. If I don't comment, it's because you speak so well for me already.

On the one hand, Facebook diverts a lot of attention (including mine). On the other hand, I can use my blog now to say things in a considered and sometimes demanding way that I could never do on Facebook or anywhere else.

As much as I enjoy reading big popular blogs like Joe.My.God, I don't want to do anything like that. Too much work, and not enough substance. Too many people venting in the comment threads, and not enough people actually talking to each other.

I turn to blogs like yours for a breath of fresh air.

You noticed that @ JMG too? ;-/ [Whenever I say anything REMOTELY positive about religion, broadly, there OR note that I'm an Episcopalian, I can count on one more "Down Votes" on my comment. ALWAYS.]

And just like that, the white boxes (around the posts here at FOJ) have returned! (I expect, pessimistically, they'll disappear again shortly)

@Pseudopiskie, generally there is not much overlap with GMC; less than 1 in 10. The exception is when I am very swamped at work, at which time I cross post more frequently. There is no overlap at all with my third blog, the Surfliner Stories--but you have to like trains to like that one!

@JCF: it's not the blog, It's your browser. That said, you might have better luck with the mobile template: http://friends-of-jake.blogspot.com/?m=1

Thanks to all the kind comments!

Actually, IT, I've just figured it out: when I put it into "Compatability View", the boxes return...

...it's just that then screws up Joe.My.God (also a Blogspot blog). So I gotta put it on, and take it off (so to speak ;-p).

Please continue. I check your blog daily. I don't often comment because I can't figure out how to use the "HTML" tags.

@Anonymous, you don't have to use HTML tags.... you can just type a comment!

Yes keep posting I read - but receive it in a feed so you may not see it in the stats. Always interesting and leads me to new sites as well.

Yes, keep it going. I pop by every 2 or 3 days, though I don't comment much.

One of your best features, IT, is your Blogroll of Friends, many of which I follow, and I usually will visit them through The Friends of Jake links.
