Please consider embedding this video on your own blogs to put a face on gay marriage.

Also, if you are a Californian, we need to keep momentum. Please email your legislators to ask them to support the repeal of Prop 8 here. SR 7 (Leno) and HR 5 (Ammiano) will put the Legistlature on record that Prop 8 should be invalidated.

Meanwhile, Mad Priest quotes
Newly released figures from the California secretary of state’s office show that the biggest contributor to the campaign to approve a ban on same-sex marriage in the state was the Knights of Columbus, the political arm of the Roman Catholic Church, which gave $1.275 million.

The conservative evangelical Focus on the Family, which fights LGBT issues across the country, gave $657,000 in money and services.

The amounts vastly surpass the $189,000 in direct cash and compensated staff time from the Mormon church.

I guess those pancake breakfasts are more lucrative than I thought.

And here I thought the Catholics disapproved of divorce.

Hopeful story in today's Los Angeles Times about some small progress on the federal front -- Rulings on gay couples' benefits question Defense of Marriage Act. The decisions don't apply beyond the couples involved but at least there's a chink in the door.

The story begins:

Brad Levenson and Tony Sears spent Thursday fielding congratulatory calls from gay rights supporters around the nation for their success in getting a federal judge to call into question the legality of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled earlier this week that Sears -- who married Levenson, a deputy federal public defender, last July -- is entitled to the same spousal benefits that heterosexual couples employed by the department receive.

But the Silver Lake couple aren't celebrating yet.

"I'm not convinced this is over," Levenson said of their long-running battle to be treated like a married couple. "But it pushes the conversation forward."

Reinhardt's ruling branded the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. The 9th Circuit's chief judge, Alex Kozinski, also weighed in on the subject last month, granting benefits to the same-sex spouse of a staff attorney for the court. But he stopped short of basing that decision on constitutional grounds.

Despite the prominence of the two judges, the rulings are legally meaningless for all but the two couples because they came in the court's administrative dispute process, rather than in lawsuit judgments.

The 9th Circuit judges ruled in their capacity as dispute-resolution officials within the federal judiciary, whose employees are prohibited from suing in federal court.

Levenson and Sears see Reinhardt's order as a step along the road to equality.

What a moving video. I have signed everything I can sign. I pray everyday for each and everyone and for equality.

I did not like Ken Starr a few years ago. I like him even less now. -residential politics may be one thing, peoples lives is something very different. Is there a way we can divorce him from his bar?
